The Site Mitigation and Restoration Program in Cypress is seeking a Senior Hazardous Substances Engineer/Senior Project Manager for the Southern California Military Sites Unit. This individual will work with technical experts within the Department of Toxic Substances Control to oversee and ensure compliance of environmental investigation and remediation at active and closed military facilities, as well as formerly use defense sites throughout Southern California. This unique position combines State-wide team work, project management, and coordination with the Department of Defense to ensure protection of human health and the environment. The selected candidate will also provide leadership support to the supervisor and serve as a technical advisor to junior staff within the Unit.

• Effectively manage technically complex hazardous waste cleanup projects, requiring extensive coordination and effective communication with staff internal to DTSC, state and federal regulatory staff, and Dept. of Defense counterparts to achieve DTSC’s mission and objectives
• Independently direct or evaluate technology screening or selection, feasibility studies, lab or field treatability testing, design/construction of remedial actions, and operation and maintenance of treatment facilities
• Provide technical and mentoring to DTSC project managers within the DTSC team
• Participate in state-wide Military Sites Team activities and other department related work groups and teams

• Strong writing skills -both technical and plain-language
• Experience making technical decisions on complex environmental remediation projects
• Ability to effectively communicate technical information and decisions in both technical and public settings
