Golden West College seeks a Part-time, non-tenured track Head Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coach to manage the men’s and women’s cross country programs and to teach Fall, Spring, and Summer intercollegiate athletic classes. The successful candidate will report to the Athletic Director and will be responsible for all aspects of planning, managing, and directing successful community college athletic teams. This includes coaching, practice and game preparation, recruiting, academic success, team travel, and fundraising. Golden West College is a member in good standing of the Orange Empire Conference (OEC) and the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A).

Head Coach, Men’s and Women's Cross Country Responsibilities:

1. Leading in all phases of coaching intercollegiate men’s and women’s cross country at the community college level, including but not limited to the recruitment of quality college student-athletes; lead practice, competitions and games; enforce team policies and rules as well as college policies and rules, fundraising and community involvement.
2. Recruitment of players, including scout, identify and recommend student athletes in such a manner that encourages diversity while maintaining a competitive atmosphere.
3. Budget development and management, practice/game management, monitor academic progress as well as social media supervision of student-athletes, build public relations, and conduct fundraising activities.
4. The head coach is expected to perform all other job-related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director within the rules and regulations of the 3C2A, Orange Empire Conference, and Golden West College and may include day, evening, off- campus and weekend assignments.
5. May drive college vehicles to and from scheduled contests.
6. Communicates with the Sports Information Director in a timely manner.
7. Coordinates with Sports Medicine the care and reporting of incidents and injuries to the appropriate college and district personnel.
8. Prepare season summaries and ensures nominations for student honors within conference, region and other athletic governing bodies are recommended and advocated.
9. Must provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the student-athletes.
10. Maintain effective professional working relationship with student-athletes, staff, administrators, alumni and the general public with regularly scheduled media and public speaking engagements; develop community support for the program, and fundraising.
11. Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.

Qualifications and Physical Demands

Minimum Qualifications :

1. Must meet one of the following qualifications under (a) through (d):

1. Valid California Community College instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990);
2. Any Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution and two (2) years of professional experience that is directly related to the faculty member's assignment. 
3. Any Associate degree from an accredited institution and six (6) years of professional experience that is directly related to the faculty member's assignment. 
4. OR , possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to the above.  Candidates making application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required materials. Please see Additional Information below to determine if you need to submit an Application for Equivalency.

2. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Licenses and Certifications:

• CPR and First Aid Certification
• Valid driver license

Desirable Qualifications :

1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational skills.
2. Evidence of the ability to actively recruit, plan, organize, and administer a men’s and women’s cross country program.
3. Experience with student success programs in a community college setting.
4. Knowledge of 3C2A and guidelines governing recruitment and retention of student-athletes.
5. 5 plus years coaching cross country coaching experience; prefer two years as a head coach.
6. Teaching experience preferred. 
7. Ability to work collaboratively, fostering a cooperative work environment.

Conditions of Employment

Employment is on a part-time, temporary basis and contingent upon verification of employment history, background verification as governed under Education Code requirements, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees. The hours of work and effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor.

SALARY  Based on LHE (Lecture Hour Equivalent) in accordance with the current Part-Time Faculty Salary Schedule.

Physical Abilities

• Requires the ability to function in a classroom, office, gymnasium or outdoor environment performing work of primarily active nature with requirement to utilize large motor skills. Requires the ability to frequently carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body; involves sitting only occasionally, walking and standing are required regularly. Requires the ability to use hearing and speech to make presentations to groups and carry on conversations over the phone and in person. Requires speaking skills to communicate with staff and students in on-on-one and small group settings, on the phone, and to distinguish sound prompts from various types of equipment.  Requires near visual acuity to read printed materials and computer screens.  Requires sufficient hand/arm/finger dexterity to retrieve work materials, operate a personal computer keyboard, and operate standard office equipment. Requires the ability to lift, pull, push or move up to 25 pounds. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, turn/twist, balance, and reach overhead.

Working Conditions

• Work is primarily performed on an athletic field, facility, classroom or office setting under general supervision and with appropriate climate controls. Travel, early morning, evening, and weekend work is required.

5. In a narrative  form (not to exceed two (2) pages), answer the following three (3) questions:
   1. What skills do you possess and how do you use them in your coaching duties?
   2. How will you contribute to the athletic department beyond coaching men’s and women’s cross country?
   3. What qualities do you see as essential in a head coach?
6. Legible copies of transcripts of all college course work must be included with your application.  Please highlight the degrees awarded on the transcripts.  (Official transcripts or certified copies are not required at this time.)
7. A copy of degrees and credentials (if applicable).
8. At least three (3) of the five (5) references listed on your application form should include recent supervisors, instructors, or others familiar with your abilities related to this position.

Who needs to apply for Equivalency? 

1) Candidates who are applying for faculty and/or academic administrator positions, but do not meet the  Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges (Download PDF reader)(Download PDF reader) , may still apply to the position under an Equivalency. Applying on the basis of Equivalency means that the applicant feels they have a combination of education and/or experience that would be equivalent to the state minimum qualifications, allowing them to teach under the discipline. Candidates must complete and upload an Application for Equivalency , along with supporting documentation, to their online employment application.  2)  Candidates who are applying for faculty and/or academic administrator positions and their required degrees are not yet posted on their transcripts at the time of application must attach a completed Application for Equivalency to their online application.

Additionally, in order to establish salary/class placement of hired faculty with the Coast Community College District, unless the degree is a doctorate in the discipline being taught, the highest class placement will be calculated by the number of upper division/graduate units earned past a bachelor's/master's degree. When requesting foreign transcripts to be evaluated, it is the applicant/employee's responsibility to request to have the specific units evaluated as well (i.e., include the number of units earned per course and the level of the course taken [upper division, graduate, lower division, undergraduate, etc.]). 

Note : The above information does not apply to Law degrees (J.D.). All J.D. degrees must be earned from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) or the California Bar Association (CBA).
