Job Description

The Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Iowa is seeking a Nurse Clinician to function as a clinical nurse expert and care coordinator to provide patient services for the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program of the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center (HCCC). The Nurse Clinician functions as an administrative and clinical liaison to patients during pre-transplant, mobilization and collection, transplant, post-transplant, and maintenance phases; educates patients and their families; coordinates and oversees the flow of patients through the phases of stem cell transplantation and maintenance care; and serves as liaison between patient, transplant physician, transplant team and referring physician.

Duties to include:

  • Collaborate with nursing staff and other health care professionals in the development and review of standards and in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care for Blood and Marrow Stem Cell Transplant Patients
  • Develop a plan of care that reflects interventions for identified health problems, incorporating age-related issues while supporting the patient’s personal health goals.
  • Monitor patients’ health status for ongoing clinical and transitional care needs. Provides direct nursing care and facilitates continuity of care and follows universal precautions.
  • Coordinate timely medical and ancillary care services based upon interpretation of patient data against evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.
  • Provide focus care management for individuals with complex medical and psychological conditions.
  • Coordinate referrals with internal and external physicians.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of patient managed care programs regarding the transplant process with the patient and family; coordinate consultations; and provide guidance to others in coordinating patient care.
  • Provide leadership for direct patient care program regarding blood and marrow stem cell transplantation, collaborating with unit-based nurse management teams.
  • Attend outpatient stem cell transplant clinic.
  • Manage and provide Telephone Triage support.
  • Participate in decision-making process for financial management, operational budgetary decisions, and cost containment strategies.
  • Serve as team liaison with patient and family, transplant physician, referring physician, transplant staff, Donor Search Coordinator, Pathology laboratories staff, and other ancillary services; verify and insure the receipt of records, films, and slides regarding diagnosis, treatment, disease status and co- morbidities.
  • Design and implement patient/family health education activities on the stem cell transplant process: pre-transplant, mobilization and collection, donor search, transplant(s), post-transplant and maintenance; answer questions; obtain information; provide literature Serve as an educational and clinical resource to patients/family/staff.
  • Facilitate communication with patient/family regarding preparation for clinical visits, admissions, pre-scheduled testing, understanding of treatment recommendations and medical management, patient education opportunities, etc.
  • Coordinate testing on transplant patients; review eligibility testing per protocol and for insurance medical review; obtain necessary consents.
  • Facilities the educational experience for health care students and monitor the care delivered.
  • Partner with the transplant team including the Social Work Specialist, Intake Specialist, Donor Coordinator, and Financial Coordinator to insure the patient’s smooth transition through the transplant phases.
  • Coordinate and track insurance medical review and authorization with the Financial Coordinator.
  • Coordinate the transfer of records on patients transferred to other institutions; identify appropriate consents and obtain signatures; follow up appropriately.
  • Maintain contact with patient throughout each phase of transplant; provide assistance and be a resource; answer questions, obtain information.
  • Participates in development and conduct of research activities related to blood and marrow stem cell transplantation.
  • Use relevant nursing research to improve clinical practice and investigate nursing care problems.
  • Incorporate the role of advocate, consultant, educator, researcher, and quality manager into daily responsibilities.
  • Is self-directed in using time.
  • Lead multi-discipline weekly transplant team meetings; prepare agenda, obtain, and present information as appropriate.
  • Enter select patient data into database; review information and update as appropriate; obtain information and provide reports, as requested.
  • Adheres to professional and legal standards of nursing practice.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patients and staff information.

Schedule: Monday-Friday, hours may be worked between 7am and 5pm.

Pay Grade: 70

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing.

2. Reasonable amount (5 years) of oncology nursing experience.

3. Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

4. Demonstrated expertise in blood and marrow stem cell transplantation.

5. Proficient in computer software applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and various databases.

6. Current Iowa Nursing License.

7. Experience managing complex information with attention to detail.

8. Excellent organizational skills.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Recent clinical oncology experience.

2. Experience with EPIC.

3. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) or Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Certification.

4. Knowledge of University policies, procedures, and regulations.
