Job Description

Senior Project Editor

UNC Press is seeking a candidate to join our dynamic and growing publishing program as a senior project editor. Working with the editing, design, and production team under the supervision of the Press’s managing editor, the senior project editor will be responsible for the timely and efficient project management of 20–25 trade and scholarly books per year from manuscript transmittal to F&Gs, including overseeing copyediting, proofreading, and indexing. In addition to ensuring the overall quality of copyediting and proofreading of assigned books, the individual in this position will be responsible for maintaining schedules and communicating them to authors and appropriate departments throughout all phases of the publication process. The senior project editor is required to make independent, professional judgments over the course of each project while managing a varied and complex workload.

Candidates must have a BA/BS or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with at least five years of experience in scholarly or academic publishing, and at least three years as a project editor, including demonstrable expertise in copyediting and proofreading. Applicants should be familiar with book-production processes and have broad knowledge of editorial styles and practices. Superior communication skills, both written and oral, are essential, as are excellent planning and organizational skills.

This is a full-time position with salary and benefits commensurate with experience. Interested candidates should email their resume, cover letter, and salary requirements to our Chief Human Resources Officer, Adele Sommerville at asommerville@uncpress.org. The review of resumes will begin immediately and continue until the job is filled. Only finalists will be contacted.
