Job Description

About IBHS
The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is an independent, non-profit, scientific research organization supported solely by the property and casualty insurers and reinsurers who conduct business or reinsure risks in the U.S.

The mission of IBHS is to break the cycle of human suffering that strikes families and communities in the wake of severe weather.  As the impacts of climate change are yielding more extreme weather events, the need to improve our current and future infrastructure is evident.  Through our continued research, our team of scientists and risk communicators deliver strategies that are geared towards improving modern building codes which lead to safer and stronger homes and businesses.  IBHS’s real-world solutions enable the insurance industry and affected property owners to prevent avoidable losses.

Job Purpose

The Innovation & Prototyping Engineer collaborates with the Research and Production Teams to develop and implement cutting-edge solutions for instrumentation, structural, mechanical, and electro-mechanical challenges. This role is integral to designing, prototyping, and fabricating experimental components to test the resilience of building materials and systems against extreme weather conditions, including hail, wind, wind-driven rain, and wildfire. The position fosters creativity in design, turning conceptual ideas into functional prototypes that support groundbreaking research initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
Design & Development
  • Conceptualize, design, and construct innovative test apparatuses and prototypes for research on building resilience.

  • Apply expertise in mechanical and electrical design, instrumentation, and problem-solving to create high-performance prototypes.

  • Convert conceptual ideas into functional prototypes, refining designs based on team discussions and testing outcomes.

  • Utilize CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Fusion 360) for precise system modeling and design iteration.

  • Apply advanced fabrication techniques, including CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, and welding.

  • Conduct rigorous quality assurance and testing on fabricated components to ensure optimal performance.

  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and operations teams to optimize fabrication workflows and enhance project outcomes.

Instrumentation & Testing Support

  • Develop instrumentation plans for small- and large-scale laboratory tests in collaboration with research and production staff.

  • Diagnose electrical or mechanical malfunctions, perform necessary repairs, and implement preventive maintenance.

  • Conduct periodic electrical testing, document findings, and recommend modifications or replacements.

  • Serve as a liaison with external vendors and manufacturers for equipment maintenance, training, and calibration.

  • Train team members on the operation and maintenance of custom-designed equipment.

Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience

  • Required: Associate degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Electromechanical, or related field).

  • Preferred: Bachelor's degree in a related field.

  • Experience: 5-7 years in prototype development, custom instrumentation, or experimental facility work. Advanced education may substitute for experience if relevant skills are demonstrated.

Technical & Computer Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Experience with 3D modeling software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or similar).

  • Knowledge of fabrication techniques such as CNC machining, 3D printing, laser cutting, and welding.

  • Ability to learn proprietary software and analytical/statistical tools.

Other Required Skills

  • Strong ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex research papers and technical documentation.

  • Proficiency in mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inference, and applied ratios.

  • Effective problem-solving and critical-thinking skills, particularly in situations requiring innovative solutions.

  • Strong hand-eye coordination for working with small components (circuits, wiring, sensors, soldering).

  • Knowledge of construction methodologies, power tools, and instrumentation techniques.

Key Competencies

  • Analytical Thinking: Synthesizes complex data, uses intuition and experience to develop solutions, and designs workflows effectively.

  • Attention to Detail: Processes detailed information accurately and consistently.

  • Adaptability: Adjusts to shifting priorities and confidently handles challenges.

  • Collaboration & Communication: Works effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Problem-Solving: Detects problems, identifies root causes, and implements practical solutions.

  • Planning & Organization: Manages multiple projects and deadlines efficiently.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Primarily in a laboratory setting with exposure to construction materials and research equipment.

  • Potential exposure to heavy machinery, power tools, electrical currents, and environmental hazards.

  • Required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical activities such as climbing, bending, reaching, and prolonged standing/walking.

  • Work may involve exposure to noise, high/low temperatures, and physical exertion.

Why Join IBHS?
IBHS is committed to advancing building safety and resilience through research and innovation. As an Innovation & Prototyping Engineer , you will play a pivotal role in developing groundbreaking solutions that protect communities from extreme weather events.
