Job Description

Job Summary: The Firefighter performs firefighting and assists with emergency medical services, including but not limited to, fire prevention, control, and extinguishment, wildland response, driving and operating firefighting apparatus and emergency vehicles, and performing rescues, basic medical treatment, assist with public education, and station maintenance duties. Essential Functions: Responds to fire alarms, medical emergencies, hazardous conditions, and related public service activities. Works as an integral part of a firefighting/EMS unit, utilizing procedures and techniques as prescribed by the department and supervising physician. Uses specialized firefighting, EMS and rescue equipment/tools, studying to attain a high level of proficiency and skill. Drives, operates, and maintains fire/EMS apparatus and related equipment after receiving in depth training as prescribed by the department. Maintains fire stations, equipment, and grounds, including routine housekeeping and maintenance. Practices firefighting skills in organized drills, training and coursework designed to advance knowledge and skill. Performs fire suppression activities including, establishing a water supply, advancing and operating hose lines, search and rescue, ventilation and salvage/overhaul operations. Performs emergency medical services, including assessment and treatment of patients within scope of practice and Fire District protocols. Assists with patient care including extrication and preparation for movement, carrying and loading into medical transport. Obtains training and EMS licensure through approved training and routine continuing education. Conducts station tours. Assists with pre-fire surveys and company level inspections. Participates in various on-the-job training programs, and other related duties as assigned. Assists and participates in Emergency Management functions and programs as needed. Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor. Education, Experience, and Licenses: High school diploma or GED. Associate's or Bachelor's degree in related field is preferred. OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Driving Requirements: Must maintain a valid Oregon driver's license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe's vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance. Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications: EMT Incentive of 10% and Paramedic Incentive of 20% included in positions hired with those respective certification requirements. Must be 18 years or older. Must pass an annual medical physical based on NFPA standard 1582. NFPA Firefighter I at the time of hire. NFPA Firefighter II within one (1) year of hire. NFPA Driver within one (1) year of hire. NFPA Pumper Operator within one (1) year of hire. NFPA Aerial Apparatus Operator preferred or within 1 year of hire. ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 certifications obtained prior to or within trial service period. NFPA Firefighter II Certification and NFPA Fire Instructor I Certification are preferred. Familiar with, knowledge of or ability to: Principles and practices of firefighting, emergency response, rescue, and fire prevention. Applicable federal, Tribal, state, and local laws and regulations. Current literature, laws, regulations, and developments that impact fire and rescue activities. Act promptly and use good judgment in emergencies and deal tactfully with the public. Perform effectively at elevated heights. Learn various fire suppression, fire prevention and emergency medical techniques, procedures and methods, including the operation of specialized firefighting apparatus. Learn the operation and mechanical principles involved in operating firefighting apparatus. Learn how to accurately recall street systems, addresses and fire hydrant locations in first response areas. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Act effectively and calmly in emergency situations. Work effectively with the public, other agencies and other employees. Perform strenuous activities under hazardous and dangerous conditions. Principles and practices of business computer use and applications. Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required. Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements: Continually requires the ability to work under strenuous or adverse conditions for extended periods, while maintaining mental alertness and concentration to maintain work rate, quality, and safety. Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication accurately, loudly or quickly. Continually requires moving about on foot to accomplish tasks. Frequently requires raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position. Frequently requires stooping which entail the use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Frequently requires bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees. Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks. Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally. Occasionally requires lifting of up to 100 pounds. This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is occasionally subject to outside environmental conditions. May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during Emergencies, or when the Tribal Emergency Operations Center is opened. Local travel is occasionally required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required. Schedule may vary, employees may be scheduled to work Part Time, On Call, 8-hour, 12-hour, 24-hour or 48-hour shifts depending on position appointed to.
