Decedent Affairs Coordinator Location Spartanburg, SC :

Position Summary

The Decedent Affairs Coordinator serves as a crucial liaison at the hospital, facilitating communication between the decedent's family, medical examiner, physicians, and funeral homes. They provide information to the family regarding hospital expiration policies and procedures. The coordinator collaborates with funeral homes to address inquiries for death certificates and cremation authorization. They manage the legal aspects of expired adult patients and fetal remains, including the completion of the Memorandum of Death, generating death certificates, and coordinating with funeral homes and vital records authorities for processing. They work with Social Services to determine unclaimed status and facilitate donations or cremations, maintaining detailed documentation. Internal communication is vital, and the coordinator interfaces with expirations specialists, the Nursing Office, and Security for seamless hand-offs. Additionally, they oversee the generation of cremation letters for unclaimed bodies, playing an essential role in legally documenting and processing these cases.

Minimum Requirements

Education

  • HS Diploma

Experience

  • 2+ years' experience in patient satisfaction/customer Service

License/Registration/Certifications

  • N/A

Preferred Requirements

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor of Science Healthcare Administration, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services or a related field

Preferred Experience

  • 2+ years' experience in healthcare or bereavement setting
  • 1+ years' experience in Funeral home/mortuary/healthcare decedent care

  • Death Certificate Processing: Facilitating the completion and filing of death certificates and related documentation with relevant authorities.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Ensuring all paperwork and documentation related to the deceased person's affairs are accurate and in compliance with legal requirements.
  • Notification and Communication: Informing appropriate parties, such as next of kin, law enforcement, and healthcare providers, of the death and any related details.
  • Supporting Legal Processes: Collaborating with legal professionals if there are legal matters related to the deceased's estate or will.
  • Record Keeping: Maintaining organized and secure records of all activities and interactions related to the deceased individual.
  • Compassionate Care: Providing emotional support and understanding to grieving families and friends during a difficult time.
  • Other duties as assigned
